The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
